My mighty runners

Posted on July 17, 2008

I had a problem, when I saw no.2’s thumb like this. It was all red and sore from all his thumb-sucking-comforting-when-he-goes-to-sleep-action. I repeatedly asked him, “Is it painful?”. He (increasingly annoyed) answers, “NO!”.

Hmph!

thumbs

Well, my problem was resolved today. Everyday, as we walk…well, I walk, the two of them run like hell to school. See, I park my car about 3 mins (walk) away from school, because I don’t like getting on the main road. Too many cars in the morning. So, we take a walk, …ok, run to school. My little mighty runner was running so hard, trying to catch up with his koko, when THUMP! he fell.

I was quite a distance, but I saw it happen. As usual..I just walked. I knew that he probably cut his lip..but I wanted to see what his big brother would. Hoping and praying that his brother would have some level of compassion in him, would pick up him and say, “It’s ok, Titi, it’s ok!”. Big Brother ran away.

*smacks forehead*

I gestured to big brother, pick him up! Big brother looked stoned. As I picked up the lil mighty wailing runner, I took some tissues and asked big brother for some water. Big Brother took out his water bottle …and drank it himself.

*smacks forehead*

I said, “AIYOOOO!! Give it to your lil brother!!!!”

“OH!”, said big brother.

Anyway, it’s just a usual childhood scrape…nothing to worry about. Just that his luscious lips is abit broken right now. Because of this, he tells me he can’t put his thumb in the mouth because his lips pain.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! What a nice thing to hear! I hope that at least this will give his poor lil raw thumb a good air rest!

As a sidenote: As with boys, I always have a tiny first-aid kit (in a tiny tupperware) with me : Plasters/band aid, small bottle of betadine, swabs, alcohol swabs, tissues. At home, the ice-pack is the most useful thing to have for most falls. I realised if I panic, my boys panic…..then all hell breaks loose. Which defeats the entire purpose of the words, “CALM DOWN!!!!!!!!”

The painful side of breastfeeding..

Posted on July 16, 2008

I’m sure alot of mums are wondering, how I can continuously get blocked ducts, and finally mastities, when I successfully breastfed my first two kids quite smoothly.

I have to say, it’s a combination of these :

1) Nursing bras - yes..I have three, which I have been using since Day 1. Day 1 of No.1’s birth, that is. It could be the seams that are jabbing into the ducts.

2) Distraction - heaps of it, when u have more than 1 kid. When the boys play, the lil baby gets all excited and always tries his best to join in. How? By squealing and shouting. So…how can he nurse if he wants to play?

3) When I was in Malaysia, I was quite bra-less. Heh..I stayed home alot, I didn’t see the sense in wearing bras! Over here, I’m out and about, having to pick the kid up from school, having to do grocery shopping…so, I’ve been wearing bras alot. Quite restricting! Plus, I’ve been wearing new re-usable pads. Not sure if this was hindering the milk flow.

4) I’ve had sore blistery nipples (basically milk under the skin) since the first time I had blocked ducts. I didn’t really think about it..until I had full blown mastities. Interestingly enough, when I brought this up to the GP, she told me not to do anything to it. She said the Antibiotics might just clear it up. When I got home, I checked with Kellymom.com, decided to ‘peel’ this blister out and hopefully the milk will flow out well.

So….what have I been trying to do? The usual stuff like :

1) Massage. It’s gotten to a point, it’s not pleasurable anymore. It is extremely painful…but one has to do what one has to do..or it’ll stay.

2) Heat/Cold compress. I’ve been doing it the crude way…but I recently got Sweetpea to order me in a breast-shaped compress….just for my poor boobies. Thank god I have friends in the right places!!! Heh!

3) Nursing like mad…but somehow this time, Baby’s über powers aren’t working!!!

4) Being a real cow. Yes……dropping on all fours..with my udders facing south..and pumping like mad.

5) Doing the marmet technique..this is a really gentle technique..which is a real big relief for me..as my poor boob is really sore, tender and painful!

I’m still trying to deal with blocked ducts…it hasn’t all dissipated yet. Been quite a frustrating week for me…but I do have some silly moments, which I’ll probably blog about later. I’m just glad that kellymom.com is around……it’s a really good resource for breastfeeding mums!

Slimming Down Rapidly

Posted on July 16, 2008

With my fever, and sudden loss of taste senses…I found myself losing heaps of weight. Although you can find Phentermine no prescription is required from the pharmacist, I think I’d rather slim down the normal way. Y’know, by running after my kids, exercising, and eating the right kind of food.

Actually, I have been eating all the right food..just too much of it..since my MIL cooks quite good Chinese food. She doesn’t use alot of oil…or salt. However, I still crave for all my spicy stuff, like Assam Laksa and Nasi Lemak!

Mastities and Me..

Posted on July 14, 2008

Bleh…

I don’t know why but this round, I keep getting blocked ducts. For my first two babies, I had it only once, each. This time around, I’ve been getting it again and again. Yesterday was the worst, had a soaring fever. Went to the dr this morning and she confirmed it was mastities.

Arrrrgh! Now I’m on antibiotics and my boobs hurt like hell. And I can’t sleep.

I’m so tired.

Moved!

Posted on July 14, 2008

How many times have I moved, in the last 6 years? 5 times. My cornell plates have been moving along with me. The first couple of times, I did it on my own. But the last big move I had, I called in the experts. After all, it’s international shipping and I couldn’t bear for my plates to be broken! They were all professionals, and handled all my glassware and china with delicate care.

I’m glad that I decided to call in professionals instead of doing it myself. When I moved over to Australia, I was devastated to find that some of my boxes were damaged. As you know, there was a great big flood in December and some of my boxes were waterlogged. Luckily, I had bought insurance and while it took some time to claim, it eventually came through.

I think if I had done it by myself, I’d be kicking myself. Hard.

Kids = exercise

Posted on July 12, 2008

It was 7°C when my kids yelled at me to bring them to McD’s playground. I have to say….that sounded soooo tempting. Me, in the warm cosy ochre-colored room, sipping a hot choc, while they were outside playing in this freezing weather.

Alas, I just went there yesterday, devouring 2 happy meals (one hotcakes, one bacon n egg muffin). They happily ran around, screaming their hearts out. I couldn’t go again today, could I? My stomach developed a fast-food intolerence suddenly.

So, I stupidly suggested to go to the neighbouring school’s playground. HOORAY!!!!! The freezing wind was cutting through my pants, as I dug my hands further into the pockets hoping to find some warmth.

Why is it that kids don’t feel cold?

So, to keep me warm, I ran. Ran and ran and ran. For 40 minutes, we kicked, bounced and ran after balls. Then the kids decided to play with the monkey bar. They left me alone. I couldn’t be running after balls now, could I? Seemed silly, without the boys.

I started freezing up again. Shouted, “LET’S GOOOOOO!!!! MAMA’S FREEZINGGGGGGGG!”

“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! 5 more minutes!!!!!!”

Adoi! So cold.

*grumble grumble grumble*. This was at 9.30am. I ate like a horse for lunch…..there goes my 40 mins of running.

On Fox News!

Posted on July 12, 2008

Can’t believe but, ZenniOptical.com is on Fox News’s “Deal or Dud”!

It basically shows how it would be easy to order prescription glasses online for adults and kids over 7 of age. For kids under 7, it was reported that since they are so young, and the frames might not fit them, it would be better to go to the optometrist. Watch it, quite an informative snippet if you were thinking of getting new frames online.

Breastfeeding : Pleasure or Pressure?

Posted on July 10, 2008

Increasingly, I find that more and more women are breastfeeding due to the Breastfeeding Campaigns in Hospitals, Parenting Groups, Blogs, Breastfeeding advocates like La Leche and ABA of course, the media.

In fact, in any Australian Hospital, if you are well, you MUST breastfeed, or face the wrath of the midwives who are, in my opinion, the guardians of this act. Even those midwives who have never breastfed in their lives, will break down your door, give you that evil stare and ‘make’ you breastfeed whether you like it or not.

To me, breastfeeding should be a personal choice. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I breastfed my two kids for the first 6-7 months of their life. Now, with my third child, I am into my 4th month. My first child, I was naive and fed my child on demand. Needless to say, that worked well for my milk supply. My second child, I was given a hormone pill to stimulate milk supply. My third child, because he wasn’t putting on weight, I was ‘made’ to pump continuously.

I remember my 3rd day, in the hospital, when a Vietnamese Lady came in and insisted on bottle feeding. The midwife was practically yelling at her telling her to breastfeed instead. I looked on enviously knowing that this Viet Lady did not for one minute understand what this midwife was going all maniacal about. She spoke little English. Lucky her. With bottle feeding, the feeds take a shorter time, you can prepare it on the spot, just need warm water and milk formula. Easy peasy, no fuss.

With breastfeeding, the first six weeks (and so on) are the most nerve-wrecking. First, if baby doesn’t latch on well, you’ll get extremely sore nipples. Plus, if baby isn’t feeding well, you’ll have to spend extra time pumping. Then you’ll get all depressed, and tired from the lack of sleep because by the time, you finish pumping, it’s time for the next feed. One feed alone can take up to one hour. When you pump, it’s quite depressing as the volume is usually very VERY low.

The immense pressure that a mother feels, from other mothers if one doesn’t breastfeed is enormous! I mean, to be mentally stigmatised as a “bad mother”…from depriving the ‘poor’ child from this precious milk, is just too much!

All this can make a mother feel inadequate and depressed. To breastfeed successfully, it’s so hard to see the trees from the forest, when everyday, you are stuck with a bub on the (painful) boob, just feeding the child. You feel like you can’t do much, there is no time to have a good shower, have a good meal, have a good rest, because there is just no time! Even when you bring the lil bub out for their checks, you’ll have to time it in a way, that they’d be fed…or they’d be wailing the house down!

But at the end of the day (or month), breastfeeding can work out as long as you keep to it….despite having terrible mood swings, bad breath and body odor (hah!), bad hair and bushy eyebrows (heh!).

So……..I’d like to ask, what is breastfeeding to you? Pleasure or pressure?

Growing needs

Posted on July 10, 2008

As my kids grow up, so do their needs. One could be orthodontic, one could be prescription glasses. Whatever it is, my wallet or bank account isn’t growing exponentially as fast. Sigh…the only thing I can do is look for good value-for-money deals with an eagle eye. The problem with orthodontics or glasses, there aren’t many such deals. Then, I have to look for good medical health insurance…which is also a growing cost, plus with their capped limits, it makes me wonder if I should really get them.

Oh well, all things considered, I should then look for other less expensive items, so that my budget isn’t stretched to the limit, right? One of those are cheaper frames, from zennioptical.com which sells directly to the customer, without the middleman. I just hope my boys won’t lose their glasses, because that would mean more unnecessary costs!

Life like a Korean Drama

Posted on July 8, 2008

I’m sure my sister-in-law wishes that her life was like a korean drama. Nothing but endless romances and funny bits. She watches so much korean drama on her laptop until her laptop memory ran out and she had to get a new external hard-drive. Actually, to be fair, there are other stuff in there, besides her korean drama…like my Boston Legal series. I just wish that she kept the Sex and the City series, from season 1.

Ah well…life is like a Korean Drama! Heh
