I’ve been trying to catch this series on TV lately. Been getting lots of good tips on how to be a better parent. This show is all about kids gone wild (out of control), and usually from the western world..and they’re sent to the far corners of earth, to be disciplined by their new parents.
Like yesterday, 2 teenagers from UK were sent to Ghana and had to stay a week in their new foster home. Within a week, these Ghanaian parents had to ‘change’ their mindset and send these kids, better people.
Firstly, these teens never lifted a finger to help with chores. So, when the Ghanaian mom handed over a “lidi brush”, the kids look like they’ve been handed pressure washers! With the ‘lidi brush’, all you do is sweep away leaves and sand. A very simple chore. Not very complicated.
Anyways, the mother taught them about abstinence from sex, and why it’s important to ‘save’ yourself for your future spouse. Initially, when she tried to tell them about it, she was too aggressive. Naturally, the teens took defense and refused to listen.
But..the next day, she opened up her heart and you could see how genuine she was in telling them about virtues. It was quite a poignant moment.
The good news is, the boy did turn into a new leaf. He now looks at girls in a different way, and wants to be more respectful towards them. Not only that, to his mom as well.
However, the girl… failed. She had a bad relationship with her mom…and that didn’t work out. She eventually moved out.
I guess… the westerners have very different sets of values..and handing them their freedom and independence too early isn’t very good. Kids always need boundaries, because without them, they’ll break down.
