Book Review : The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

by mott on July 18, 2009

The character “Christopher John Francis Boone”, has Asperger Syndrome, a form of Autism. He finds a dead poodle with a pitchfork pierced through it, much like a shishkebab, and is saddened by its’ death. While he does not like to hold or touch people, he pulls the fork out and hugs the dead dog.

Christopher is a mathematical genius, and knows it will be a super good day, if he sees 5 red cars in a row. He does not like the colour, “yellow” and “brown” and will never eat any food that is in that colour. He also doesn’t like his food all mixed up or touching each other. He lives with his father, after his mother died from a heart attack, in a hospital.

Christopher is determined to find out who killed the dog, and along the way, finds clues and discovers that some things aren’t quite what they seem to be.

Even though this is a fictional character, it was interesting to see how a person with Asperger’s, function and think. I honestly liked the part where he wonders why some people are termed with “special needs”. His reasoning? Everyone has special needs (like how I need my glasses and some people need heart medication), so, why do certain people only get labelled with it?

I also like the fact that he loves a Time Table..and hates going on holidays, only because one often does not have a clue what to do on a holiday! Much like me! Ha ha ha!

All in all, it is a very very very good read, and I was surprised to find it in the Teens/Young Adults section. Go on.. borrow it, buy it.. the ending will surprise you.

I’ll give it my 5 thumbs up. Excellent read.
