Book Review : The “O, My” in TonsillectOMY & AdenoidectOMY

The “O, MY” in TonsillectOMY & AdenoidectOMY : How to prepare you child for surgery, A Parent’s Manual” is certainly a heaven-sent book for parents. If you have a child and had to prepare them for tonsillectomy & adenoidectomy surgery (or any surgery, for that matter), this book will guide the parent through its various phases on how to ultimately prepare the child.

Most children are only afraid IF they don’t know what’s happening. Most times, parents find it difficult to explain certain things, like why their tonsils need to be removed. Explaining the procedure to the child is already difficult. Plus, post-care surgery is also crucial in ensuring that the child does not get agitated or emotionally tensed, as it would delay the healing.

I somehow also think that this book also provides valuable tips on preparation for all kinds of surgery. A few weeks back, when my son fell, and there was a possibility that he would have to be in surgery, I panicked and wondered how I could tell my 3 year old what was happening. As it was, being in the hospital being poked, probed and x-rayed, it was freaking him out already.

Who knew a few days later, the book arrived and while he did not need to go into surgery, I wished that I already read it, so I knew what to say, instead of just saying, “It’s going to be OK”. My 3 year old would have asked all the “Why?” questions and drove me mad only because I didn’t know how to respond to him.

Buy it! As I won’t get into the nitty gritty details of this book, I believe Laurie E. Zelinger has done a fine job putting together everything a parent needs to, from A-Z. The fact that she went through it herself, with her son, makes it even more assuring that this book will be every parent’s security blanket.
