Review : One Fifth Avenue

In Candace Bushnell’s latest book, “One Fifth Avenue”, you’ll find a myriad of characters that gives you a peek into a world of conflict, lost (and found) loves and the fabulously rich! When the wealthiest and oldest socialite in the building dies in an untimely manner, everyone is anxious as to who would be the new occupants of the luxurious 7,000 square foot penthouse. From Mindy Gooch, the embittered president of the co-op board and a popular blogger, to Enid Merle, a gossip columnist who lives next door to her highly successful screen-writer nephew, Philip Oakland. With Philip Oakland, his former love, Schiffer Diamond moves back into the building - and this is where there is a love twist. The young, sexy, iPhone-y generation, Lola Fabrikant literally jumps into his life, hoping that SHE will be the one Phillip marries. Also, let’s not forget Billy Litchfield who doesn’t actually live in the building (as he really can’t afford to), who befriends the new occupants of the coveted penthouse, Annalisa and her math-wiz husband, Paul Rice.

A story with these elements - sex, tragic deaths, sabotage, ‘planned’ accidents and bankruptcy..is surely all part of the rich lifestyle that we, the minions of the earth, love to read about. If you are looking for an easy book to curl up to this Christmas, this would be it. While it might take awhile to familiarize yourself with the characters…once, you’ve gotten their first names down to a pat, you’ll wish there was a sequel to this book!
