Emotional growth

by mott on October 12, 2008

I really love the school system here. They seriously care about each individual student. I was just talking to a mum last weekend and she told me about her son. He is only about 7, but in terms of academics, he’s really advance. All his teachers say that he can go for Year 3. But, the only thing holding him back is his social interaction skills. They felt that if he did go, he will just withdraw in one corner, as it would be difficult for him to make good friends. So, to ensure he was emotionally ready, they decided to let him just continue with Year 2.

Isn’t that great? If I was in KL, I know that any mom that knew her child was ready to skip one year, they’d go for it without giving a second thought. To be honest, so would I. But, I never would have stopped in my tracks and thought about his emotional well-being.

I never thought …sure, he’d be a genius, but if he just can’t talk in a room of strangers..what’s so good about being a genius? Nobody will know how smart you are!

I wish I could show you how much No.1 has blossomed under this school system. He’s less shy than normal. He’s still shy…but at least, he looks into people’s eyes when he’s greeting them. He’s learning to speak more in public. They have a wonderful day called “Show and Tell” and each student has to go in front of the class and share with his classmates what favourite thing they’ve brought and three things about it.

Next Monday, they have to talk about their favourite folktale. Together, No.1 and I have been practising how to tell a story. Being the drama-mama, I’ve added in some action. HAHAHAH…It’s such a cool story (damn! I’m digressing!) about stopping and smelling the flowers.

The point is… it’s not all about learning and getting 100% marks. I mean, his school emphasizes alot on academics..and they pride themselves on having very smart kids (winning chess competitions, tennis, swimming, etc)…but they look at how they can help the kid improve on their weakest abilities..and help strengthen their stronger skills. Isn’t that what life should be all about? Balance?

mott,
I have to say Malaysia Education System has to be improved. Here, they emphasized more on EXAMS! Everyone studies just for exams. Unlike in Aust, they really understand something in depth. And like you said, they help the kid improve on their weakest abilities and help strengthen their stronger skills.

Sounds like a great school you have there.

this is the kind of school I am looking for. The education system in Malaysia has to improve a lot to catch up.
