A good gift

One of the best gifts I ever received as a child, was a simple savings account. My mother helped open an account in a nearby post-office, when I was only 7 years old. I remember excitedly lining up in a queue, feeling quite matured, with my 1 dollar in my hand and her hand in my other. I still remember the heat and the humidity of that post-office, as it was already mid-day then.

Then the excitement of holding my own savings passbook and seeing the value printed on it, gave me such an ‘grown-up’ feeling. From that day on, I saved every coin and dollar I could, just to make that deposit. Till today, I enjoy looking at my savings passbook…and get a small thrill whenever there is an interest earned. I wish the interest rates would go up higher..now that would give me a big thrill…heh!

I opened up savings accounts for each of my boys….just for kicks. Have you opened any for your kids?
