Sand in his Lunchbox

by mott on June 19, 2008

I swear…No.1 somehow survives without his lunch. Everyday, my mother in law would pack him really scrumptious lunch; fried noodles (can be MiHoon, maggi mee or wan tan mein), egg sandwiches or something filling. Everyday, he’ll come back with his lunch intact. Sometimes, with added ingredients like sand.

Everytime I ask him..he’ll say, it fell into the the sandpit. The kids here..they don’t eat their lunch at a canteen. When it’s a sunny day, they have it at the playground. If it rains, they have it at their classroom (and that’s when his lunch WILL be eaten).

I’ve been looking at different recipes, just to entice him to eat. Homemade finger foods like chicken nuggets or potato cutlets should be good, eh? Fortunately (or unfortunately for me), he doesn’t like sausages or any processed meat like ham..so, it’s gotta be au natural. But that means more work for me! Sigh…

Hey Mott,

How about yoghurt? They come in small packs, and they’re nutrituous! Or you could try little milk boxes. They’re yummy, convenient and easy to pack! Number 1 doesn’t seem too hungry, so something light will do…

You could also try raisins (healthy and lotsa energy!), fruits like bananas (plenty of potassium), baby carrots, fruit-based energy bars, muffins, cups of jelly etc…

Something bright and colourful helps children who are quite picky, and changing the menu helps too!

Oh, and why don’t you ask him what HE would like? Giving them some decision-making and autonomy might give some enthusiasm in his lunches!

And you could drop little surprises every now and then in his box. Let is be a XXX-and-mummy thing that you share.

For example, a tiny figurine of his favourite cartoon, a sticker etc etc etc. If he looks forward to seeing what is in his lunch box-don’t make it too often, otherwise it loses it’s charm, and you’d be hard press finding something to ‘top it up’-, he might be even more tempted to eat what is in the box…

Or, write him a special note from you (like, ‘Dear XXX. I’m very proud of the way you picked up your clothes yesterday. Keep it up!’) everyday!

Hehe…Hope that helps!

Daphne, Thanks for all your suggestions. Unfortunately (haha..don’t u hate that?), he is a very picky eater. He won’t touch yogurt, raisins, energy bars, jelly..funny kid, eh? But ur suggestion on a note, small toy, are very good ones. Oh..and we do ask him everyday what he wants for lunch..but sadly, he doesn’t eat it anyway. Sigh..

Sasha, yes…. that’s an excellent idea. I wrote this before I spoke to u..hehehee!
