I’m probably the last person to comment in PhotoHunter today.
Ah well..the important thing is that I’m participating. Heh!
Moving to a new country, I think it’s really important for me to constantly remind my children of their culture and where they came from.
Perhaps, I just want them to be proud of who they really are and be real happy of who they are. So, if someone tells them that they’re ‘yellow’…they just say (very proudly), “Yes, I am!”
Chinese New Year is coming up. There will be no massive celebration with firecrackers and new year cookies, or new clothes. Over in Oz, it’ll be pretty quiet, with the occasional visits to friends/relatives’ homes.
Being our first year, it will see us celebrating it rather quietly, with my paternal granma flying over to be with us. Just to keep this pregnant woman company…heh..or so we tell her. Y’see, ever since I got married, I never got to see her during the family reunion dinner as I had to return to my husband’s side of the family. This will be very first year, I get to be with her. I’m soo happy about that!
Yes, we’ll have our reunion dinner on the eve of Chinese New Year..and YES! I bought Yee Sang! Thanks to Sandee!
So, one of the ways of reminding them of their culture is the ‘synonymous chinese new year fish origami’…I’ve made heaps of CNY decorations with the help of internet origami and some old ang-pows. This is just one of them…..I’ll show more later when I have the time to put it up.
This round..I’m seriously late..but better late than never!

Culture, country, patriotism……Excellent choice for “important”!!!

Happy Weekend!
I think this is a very valuable post and it is important to cherish our family traditions…
My friends told me I have an accent and that’s important to show the roots of where I was raised. Great theme.
Have a gret weekend.
Hello! How great! Origami is so fascinating… No secret about the cats & rats – the tricolor ones are usually great rat-catchers. She gave this one to the kittens – they had a grand old meal!
u have to learn to be alone and brave. at the same while making yr children aware of their origins it might b a good idea not to keep them out of the mainstream. the key word to survival is assimilation
just my humble nonsense.

Good to see that you are back in here. I did not know that you knew Sandee, her hubby and Aidan etc. What a surprise for me. I guessed Malaysians do meet up frequently in Oz.
The importance of culture is a must especially you are in another country. I’m glad that my cousins still know how to speak our dialect even they have been there for years and married too with the locals. Nice post here. Take care

Don’t like being called a colour. Don’t like talk of ‘races’, to be honest. Rather, like to remind people that we are all members of the one and only human race.
I agree with you on your take about culture. In fact I have something like that in my entry, about the importance of culture.
Take care, Mott!
Btw, my other entry:
