The myths and truth of pregnancies
Posted on November 26, 2007
Being chinese, you will definitely hear alot of taboo things we pregnant mums should not be doing..or eating!
And…some of it, we HAVE to do!
Here’s a few myths which I managed to debunk myself….
1) Drink soya milk as it will ensure baby’s fair complexion. Bah! No such thing! No.1 and No.2 came out fair..and I did not consume soya milk everyday! It’s all in the genes!
2) If your baby’s nipple is sticking out, the next one will be a girl. Bah… I can fully attest that I do not have girls.. not yet anyway!
3) Don’t hang things higher than your head, you will tighten the umbilical cord around baby’s neck. Ok…..I had to hang clothes, on places higher than my head..so far, none of that has happen yet!
4) Don’t eat too much chilli, your baby will come out with heaps of rashes. I seriously doubt this is true. Because my No.2 had very very lil rashes!
And..then here are some ‘truths’…
1) If your baby’s umbilical cord is very thick….means you’re very fertile…. Okayyyyyyyyyy…
2) The ultrasound scan. Don’t do too many..as in, not every visit means you need to have one. The local hospitals now have a directive to reduce no. of scans, due to large increase of abnormal births. So..do be aware..
Okla..that’s about all I can think about. There’s much much much more common myths out there…but I can’t think of any at the mo…can u?

My relatives told me to drink lots of fresh cow’s milk (sold & delivered) by indian man so tat my bb can have fair complexion.
I answer back..”Indian drink so much fresh cow’s milk..how come their skin so dark”….

I was told not to eat crabs because later son ‘will have many hands and legs’ - like to touch touch people’s things. No spicy food. No cold food. No moving furniture or house. No nailing…… wah! so many cannot.
After my delivery, I didn’t listen to the no bathing for one month part. Cannot tahan the heat and smell!

Nice one - I’ve been told so many bloody times to drink soya milk so that my kid will turn out fair. He IS fair, but no thanks to soya milk at all! I tell this to everyone who does a double-take between me and him…isn’t it time someone published a journal article on this???
