Apa kesalahannya?*

by mott on October 5, 2007

Ha ha…In the spirit of this Bahasa Malaysia test my lil 5year old had to take, I decided to insert a Malay title.

It essentially means (for those of you who do not speak this language), “What was his error?”

As most of you would know, he is a boy. And, some of you know that he is attending a kindergarten that I believe has ol-skool Chinese Teaching methods. Although they claimed that they also include Montesorri(?) Teachings and Jackiedorri Methods (unfortunately, this Mama is really too lazy to be too concerned what methods they actually use…all she wanted was for her kid to have fun, playing in their HUGE toy room and HUGE playground!), I always had a feeling that they were either from Chinese School or they used to teach in Chinese School.

Well…my lil tyke came back with his test results from last semester..or rather, this slackr mom just noticed this sheet la.

As I went through it, chuckling at his lil cute mistakes, like 7+0=4 … I suddenly saw this.

bmtest

How can a BOY put ‘saya**’ as a girl? I completely understood why he matched ‘saya’ with a picture of a boy.

It is also very obvious to him that since ‘saya’ was already matched to a boy (aka him), ‘kurus**’ would be the last answer…the girl-lah!

**saya – me, kurus – thin.

But of course, if he really thought laterally, ‘kurus’ could be the boy as well.

Which then brought me to a big heave of sigh……it’s so obvious that these ‘teachers’ are very narrow minded. In fact, I find that while in the Chinese Teaching Method, it can be beneficial…they do tend to churn out rather intelligent robots. People who do not mess with colouring outside the lines. My boy..he loves to colour wildly (like his trees would be a wonderous purple/blue colour….but he gets a “D” for it).

I really wonder why it is so difficult for the Chinese to understand that sometimes, black n white can be gray?

*pulls hairs*

Then again, I’m glad that Mr.T is Mr.T because, he makes me see that gray can also be yellow, green and blue…coz sometimes, I’m too bull-headed to see otherwise.

The person who came up with that exercise definitely need to go back to school himself/herself.

And don’t put too much pressure on the grades, I believe children should always have fun when they are learning, and it’s the teacher’s responsibility to ensure that they provide such an environment. Grades, they are only good for show.

Ha ha ha… but does help get u a job, eh?

That exercise is hugely confusing
Even after you explain, I still can’t connect them!
Sigh.
itelyu, sometimes those guys who write the exercise book need to think it differently

About colouring outside the line …
can I pinjam your idea and write a post on it later?

Sure sure..pinjam la….

LOL! You know, he is right. Did you ask the teacher why his marks were deducted?

No la..I’m pretty sure, they’d just look at me oddly! As it is, I can’t speak Mandarin! *shy*

Hahahah!! How stupid can the question be! Like that all the girls in class will get full marks while the guys get half! Oh dear poor things… guess those teachers are purely chinese educated! But you better check more often on the bahasa homework… before the teachers starting to teach your son confusing things again! want me to teach? A1 in bahasa SPM! Ahahhhaha!

Do drop by my new website http://www.naturallynesh.com! hehehe! Paid for new domain!

Hi M–love this post–an outside the line thinker can sometimes do wonderful things, eh (smile)?

heh…. and sometimes, very VERY naughty things! ;-)

Hey Mott,

Haha! I understand where he went wrong…In fact, I think the premise of the question is flawed anyway…’Saya’ should not be a part of it at all! Children age 5 cannot picture so abstractly lar…To them, ‘Saya’ is me, and me alone…They cannot think of the picture as representation of a ‘Saya’ in general…

How’s baby coming along? Hope all’s well…*Hugs*

The lil one is hvg a real good time…being serenaded daily by the two big brothers!

Abt the question..I think they “HAD” to ask them, because it was part of their writing exercise…HA HA HA!

Come to think of it, he’s right! lol Daphne who commented before me made a very good point!

of course he’s right. The girl, I’m sure, would like to be “kurus” right? HA HA HA!!!

Aiyoh, poor boy…
The teacher a bit ku-ku lar… of all things she has to use those… don’t use a boy and girl mah… so confusing for the little ones.

11 nadia October 8, 2007 at 12:42 pm

Oh dear. What a horrendous mistake! Did either Mr T or you speak to the teacher about it?

Hahahah…no la. We just had a real good laugh about it! I explained to my kid that he was actually right! And I ‘corrected’ his test scores! WAKAKAKAKAKAK!!! Talk about changing the marks!!! So naughty la this mum!
