Muhibbah spirit…

Posted on September 3, 2007

Last night I attended my ol school friend’s wedding. We were all part of a ‘gang’ made of very different races. As a teen growing up, I never really saw race or colour. Not until I immediately left school. There we were, loitering around coffee shops (as it was really cheap to drink there), just not doing anything. Like all good-for-nothing school-leavers do.

It was there an old Ah Pek came up to us..and beamed happily at us. Naturally, we were a lil bit apprehensive, coming from an all girls school and our experiences with stupid hamsup men. He asked each of us, our race. He beamed so brightly, with his rotted teeth, we were really getting scared and ready to cabuts for our lives.

He said, “Saya sangat gembira. Semua you lain-lain. Sangat muhibbah. Macam muhibbah geng. Semua you boleh cakap cakap, sangat gembira”.

“I am so happy. You are all different. So multi-racial. Like a multi-racial gang. You all look so happy talking to each other”.

We were kinda stunned but smiled quickly. We didn’t really know what to say actually, simply because we never thought of us as different. Just damn good-looking, hot and too good for this town. So obvious, huh.

Who were we? We were Chinese, Chinese-Dutch, Indian, Eurasian-Pakistan, Malay and Malay-Filipino-Chinese. We sang alot together. We laughed alot together. We cried alot together. Of course, we got naughty alot, also. All cha-pa-lang people.

Yesterday, as I look at my friends’ faces, I was glad we weren’t taught about racism. I guess sometimes being naive is much better than being knowledgeable.

Sad to say… I don’t see much cha-pa-lang kids mixing around much nowadays. They much rather stick to their own kind…much like when you go overseas to study.

It’s quite sad nowadays, innit? Sigh, what’s wrong with mixing with different races?

The problem is, the politician is the one which cause the muhibah to disappear

Wow, you are so lucky to have such a mixed bunch. I stood out like a sore thumb in school!

Btw, did I hear right that you’ve got a second one on the way? Congrats!!!

Ya, how sad it is. More often than not, we end up sticking with ‘our own kind’ and talk abt ‘unfairness’ and stuff. Sad.

I was thinking about this issue recently. Actually all these racial issues are fired up by the politicians. In school, ethnic and colour were never an issue. I believe even for vernacular school. It is only after we leave school, the ugly things that “adult” do that makes us aware of racial issues.
